this should really go on my costuming- and craft blog, but so many people on twitter wanted to see pictures that it’s more convenient to put it here.
side note: it’s amazing how many people want pictures as soon as you say “chain mail” or even “bikini.” put them together and suddenly you’re popular. i’m not complaining; i’m happy to have as many geeks on my flist as i do.
so, here you are.

the top is half of the set. i’m not wearing the other half because it needs repair (and i’m pretty brave, but not *that* brave). the links are about 1/8″, oval, and are in an asian six-in-one pattern. this would be excruciatingly expensive chainmail if i bought it today (i’ve had it for about fifteen years).

i overdyed a hard rock camo tee with black, to grey it out some, then cut it to shape with integral ties. i used the spare as part of the skirt, which you can see a little better in some images:

i also overdyed the pouch belt, which is milsurp from a southeast asian country (i forget which), and was really quite a bright green when mr. tillinghast gave it me. it has wooden toggles, instead of metal closures, i assume to make it quiet.

i swear i think this is the least complicated costume i’ve ever done. i pretty much had everything already; nothing needed to be manufactured except my shoulder piece, which was just paint, aging, and some minor leatherwork.

yes, it’s a mask. a regular face mask. i reinforced it quite a bit.

dreads are mine. they’re my usual low-committment style falls. the rest of the hair is mine, of course. i’m extremely competent at making dreads. to put it as mildly as possible.

the bullet belt is NOT a real bandolier. i wasn’t going to wear a real one; they are heavy, and i had enough heavy stuff.

some of our tribe. i can’t remember who we were battling here. maybe umbrella corp. maybe the agent zeros?

my crossbow is a standard el cheapo hand-fired deal. the actual bolts it fires are tiny: i brought big ones for show (although i don’t seem to have gotten any pictures of my quiver rig).

we won first place in large group. Captain Shrunken Head there has our trophy. i think he’s going to mount it on our car somehow.

feral children. (you have to start them off right, or they don’t grow up properly savage.) (this is the last anyone saw of Santa Vader. i think they may have been a bit peckish.)

yeah, i don’t know. growling? belching? winking? i *was* hanging out with the barbarian tribe a lot. anything is possible. (side note: barbarians are fun. i think i may have bitten one on the face. it’s how they flirt.)

lastly, here is video of the con as a whole. red fork tribe is in there a good bit. we may have sort of stolen the show a little. we weren’t really trying to: we were just, y’know, having a good time.

why is ayybody getting all up-in-arms about this SIA thing? a lot of people i’m hearing from – and despite that i’m supposed to be taking a break from internets, it’s extremely difficult when you’re a compulsive monitor like i am – a lot of the peoples are more-or-less upset about the amount of water they’re wasting to build Giant Snow Ramp Of Dreadful Doom and such.

i mean, yeah, water is a thing, always – but are we still in a drought? (i honestly don’t know, at this point.) waste is never a good, of course, but isn’t this sort of a cost-benefit-analysis continuum? visitors are gonna spend money downtown and such, aren’t they? i mean, i know trickledown economic theory is utter selfserving manufactured bullshit on the part of people who really push it, but getting a little extra cash to the regular workers of the city isn’t a terrible thing, is it?

meh. maybe i’m biased because it sounds, like, … kinda fun.

and i’m cranky because i can’t really get out and ride much. i missed a meetup ride, Big Ruck called me the other day and i missed *that*, and i’ve got what’s called, in the most rigorously technical terms available, Other Crap Goin’ On which is crowding all sort of rational discourse out of my mind like an overrising cake pushing everything else out of its cakepan (see this? i can’t even make a decent f’ing analogy right now; this is the most abjectly pitiful way to be; i shouldn’t even be conversing).

i’m going to shut my whore mouth now and give you some Video Friday.
