A HULLBRIDGE woman is searching for an iconic photo of her brother.
Sandra Barrett, 68, wants to trace the original picture of her brother Raymond Kelly on his Vespa.
The image has become the defining symbol of the Mod movement, despite Raymond’s early death at the age of 17 in 1965.
The picture has appeared in books and magazines, on mugs, purses, handbags, clocks and even on television.
Even Sting’s famous ‘Aceface’ character in the film Quadrophenia is strikingly similar to Raymond.
Mrs Barrett said: “It’s nice that my brother is remembered. But it would be great to find out where the photo was taken, and why it appears almost every time a newspaper or magazine needs a photo to illustrate Mods.”
Recently, the photo was prominently displayed in a TV advertisement for Liverpool Victoria insurance, fronted by Cilla Black.
Mrs Barrett, who runs Prestige Dry Cleaners, in The Approach, Rayleigh, said: “I made contact with the insurance company and asked who was in charge of their advertisements, but I had little joy.”
Dean Kelly, Raymond’s nephew, saw the photo in a Leigh shop window in 2004.
Initially, he thought it was his father, but discovered it was his father’s late twin.
The image also appears in the current catalogues for Ben Sherman and Lee Cooper.
It is believed the image first appeared on the front of the weekly music magazine, New Musical Express, in 1979 as part of a feature on a Mod revival.
Sandra, who lived in Hainault Avenue, Westcliff, with her brothers in the 1960s, said: “I only discovered that when a book called Mods had a reproduction of the front cover.”

I’m not sure if this should be called a set of motorized skates, a motorized unicycle, or something else. At any rate, the FlyRad pulls the user around while wearing roller skates. It can reach speeds of 25 MPH and travel 31 miles on a single charge.

Users can “ride” the vehicle in a number of ways including sitting, standing, squatting or hands free. Riders can even switch positions on the go. In standing mode the device is held much like a jackhammer which tows the rider along, while in sitting mode the rider sits on the saddle with a pair of skates acting as the vehicle’s front wheels.

Since steering is controlled by the skates, the rider can let go of the handle bars altogether to give the sensation of flying that presumably gives the FlyRad its name. When ridden in this way the FlyRad stays in place by transferring the rider’s weight onto a couple of pads attached to the bottom of the handlebars that push down onto the rider’s upper legs.

in other news, i like this template, but it needs a significant amount of php fixing to suit my standards, so i’ll be doing that and some widgetty stuff over the next few. at any rate, the site is safe to look at without fear of needing eye and/or brain bleach, now.  i don’t know how long i’ll keep it: i’ve got a good idea for a deep winter theme. we’ll see.

it will go with the giant tree i’m going to freehand out of contact paper, as soon as i quit my job* and have oodles of free time.
